Tasikmalaya Earthquake Donation Report

October 18th, 2009

On September 9th, 2009, CERDAS Foundation launched an urgent appeal to help the people in the city of Tasikmalaya and the surrounding cities on the province of West Java in Indonesia following a strong earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale that struck the area on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009. Our appeal has received generous responses from the public and donations to the sum of $1,685.00 have been collected.

On September 29, 2009, all of the donations have been sent to Tasikmalaya and are being used to respond to the immediate demand of basic needs of the quake victims in the area. With the destruction of houses and infrastructure, the survivors are finding themselves unable to meet their most basic needs. According to the WHO Report (September 18, 2009), more than 200,000 houses, schools, offices and religious buildings have been damaged. Over 150,000 people have been left homeless, remaining in makeshift tents or without any form of shelter. The earthquake has claimed over 80 lives and left 370 people with major injuries, 1,098 with minor injuries, and 27 people missing.

To distribute the aid, CERDAS collaborated with Pusat Zakat Umat (PZU) of Garut, a Non-Government Organization (NGO) that has access to the affected area. (Receipt link). PZU used the money to buy basic needs from the local market and bundle them into 500 packages. Each package contains rice, instant noodles, sardines, cooking oil, biscuit, soy sauce, and corned beef. These packages have been distributed to the victims in 2 districts (see the picture below):

  • Tasikmalaya district : 300 packages
    • 170 packages for Cisayong county
    • 130 packages for Cigalontang county
  • Ciamis district: 200 packages
    • 60 packages for Kertamulya village
    • 50 packages for Baregbeg village
    • 40 packages for Sindangkasih village
    • 50 packages for Gunung Cupu village

These donations have given an immediate relief for people who are in real need in this terrible disaster. On behalf of the people of Tasikmalaya, we would like to express our gratitude to all donors for your kindness, generosity and support.
